広島で被爆死した米兵たち |
★ 今日は、広島原爆に関するアメリカの悲劇についてお話します。物語の主人 公は次の4人のアメリカ人青年です。1945年8月6日朝、広島に投下さ れた原爆直下で被爆ししました。先ず心からの哀悼の意を表して皆さんにご 紹介します。

★ この4列の名と記号は、軍人ならだれでも身に着けている認識票です。この 4人は第二次世界大戦の対日戦争で“戦死した”とされ、故郷の遺族にはそ の戦死公報が届けられていました。それから20年も経って、明らかにされ たのは、広島に原爆が投下された1945年、8月6日、爆心地近くにあっ た日本軍の捕虜収容所でアメリカ爆撃機の原爆投下の犠牲になり被爆死し た、との新事実でした。
★ 20年も秘匿されていた事実を米国防相が認めたキッカケは、1965年夏 に毎日新聞が報じた一連の調査報道記事「米兵、広島で原爆被爆死」でし た。市民の記憶からその事実を掴んだ毎日新聞はその事実を詳細な証言デー タで裏付け否定し続ける米国防相を認めざるを得ないよう追い込んだので す。
★ 最初は、単なるうわさ話、そんな事実はない、と米国防省は否定コメントを 出し続けました。しかし、旧日憲兵隊資料に基づく“状況証拠”を積み重ね た追及すると「その事実は承知していないが調査する」ところまで追い詰め ることが出来ました。
★ 原爆投下当時、爆心地近くの立町には臨時捕虜収容所に20数人のアメリカ 人捕虜が収容されていた事実を元憲兵隊員が「同じ日に米軍機 二機が撃墜さ れ、乗組員が、それぞれ別の地点にパラシュートで脱出した、という状況 だった」と証言しました。これは、信憑性が高 い、 と、毎日新聞はその目 撃者を探しました。
★ 多くの情報を収集中、一人の老人が古い日記がある、と、見せてくれた 1945年7 月28日のページには次の記述がありました。 「1945年 7月28日、米爆撃機2機来襲、 広島 山口県境付近上空で我が砲兵隊に撃 墜され、乗組員はパラ シュートで脱出したが捕虜 となった」
★ 毎日新聞は直ちに提携関係にあったアメリカのUPIに打電、「米兵捕虜収容の 日時、場所を特定した。国防省に確認を」と依頼しました。やがて UPIから 返事が 届きました。 「おめでとう。国防省 は認めた。その爆撃機 は B-29 ではなく、 B24. 。国防省は、未だ乗組員の原爆被災は認めていない が、“戦死”は確認は した。確認出来た“戦死”者は次の四人」
★ それが、冒頭の四人 のアメリカ兵士の名前 であったのです。
★ 米兵被爆死の事実は、毎日新聞だけでなく、アメリカの有力各紙にも掲載さ れ、アメリカ国民に 大きな衝撃を与えまし た。全米に盛り上がっ た遺家族 の調査要求 に、その後、アメリカ政府は、詳細な調査結果 を公表し、遺族 に陳謝し、その補償へと動きましたた。
★ 実を言いますと、この記事の調査報道を担当したのは私です。毎日新聞の社史「毎 日の3世紀」下巻の158ページに囲み記事「米兵もヒロ シマで被爆死」特 ダネ秘話が記録されています。
★ が、そのことより、私が、今日、この話を持ち出して強調したいのは、戦争 の虚しさです。広島原爆投下で「米兵が友軍米兵を惨殺する」 戦争はこの 不条理を「止む無き擬制」と不問に付します。そのための隠蔽。ベトナム、 イラク、アフガニスタン・・・米軍趣くところ、多くの友軍誤爆があったは ず、それは報道されることはありません。
★ 原爆被災から72年経った今、日米は恩讐を超えて強い友情の絆で結ばれて います。その礎になった米兵、Charles,O.Baumgarther Hugh,Henry Atkinson James,M. Ryan Elison, Buford J.の4人の名は、広島平 和公園の原爆慰霊碑に合祀されています。
★ その前に立つと、誓いの言葉が刻まれています。
「安らかにめむってくださ い。過ちはくりかえしませぬから・・・」
原爆は、敵味方を分かたず、男女、年寄り、子供の見境なく人間を惨殺しました。その犠牲になったのは、日本人だけではありません。
★、 アメリカ兵だけでなく、広島留学中の東南アジア学生や在広島外国人を多数、惨殺しました。ヒロシマ原爆投下の秘話「アメリカの悲劇」は「戦争に正義はない」ことを 明白に証言しています。それを私は強調したく一文を認めました。

◎ Four lines of names and symbols are the copies of Military Identification Tag worn by these soldiers. These youg people were said to have been killed in World War II and their deaths were delivered to the bereaved families as "Honorable War Death" .
◎ Twenty years later, it was revealed that in 1945 and August 6, when the atomic bomb was dropped upon Hiroshima, They were at the POW camp nearest to the hypocenter. And were killed by the bombing..
◎ The fact had been hidden for long by the American occupation forces Press Code Later in 1965, U.S. Defense Minister approved of this fact,because of a long series of investigative news articles "The Death of US soldiers by A-bombing in Hiroshima" printed on the Mainichi Shimbun in the summer of 1965. The Mainichi Shimbun who grabbed the fact from the citizen's memory reported backed up with detailed testimonial data.

◎ According to the former M.P.officer, at the time of the A-bombing, there was a Military War Prison near to the hypocenter and more than 20 Amerikan war prisoners were detained, They were the boarding soldiers of two B-29. Both were shot down on the same day, They
◎ It was a so difficult Situation to find the point where they should escape to in a parachute. They should have landed separately This was highly credible. The Mainichi Shimbun started to look for its witnesses
◎ A old man had an old diary that had recorded the following description. "On July 28, 1945, two American bombers came in upon our village and they were shot down by our artillery in the sky above the Hiroshima Yamaguchi prefectural border, the crewmembers escaped in parachute but became captives"
◎ The page on July 28, 1945 had given to The Mainichi Shimbun who immediately dispatched American UPI that had been in a partnership relationship, asked to confirm the date and the time of the U.S. POWs detention and the location at Ministry of Defense.
Eventually they received a reply from UPI. "Congratulations, the Ministry of Defense admitted, the bomber is not B-29,but B24. The Ministry of Defense has not yet acknowledged the crew members' atomic bomb damage, but confirmed four "battle dead" soldiers. They added a list of names killed.

The fact of the death of the US soldiers was posted not only on the Mainichi Newspaper but also on several American newspapers and gave the American people a big shock. Following the survey request of the relatives families who were excited nationwide, the US government then announced the detailed findings, apologized to the bereaved family, and moved to compensate for it.
