7 p.m. Is that okay?”(7時、でいいですか?)
★ "OKKeee"(for OK) My wife replied me in Japanized English with a smile.
At a moment, I felt a little uncomfortable by listening to it. At school, when we were young, we were told that OK was a slang, never used by the cultured people. They should say it "all rghit" instead.
But it sounds like a very natural Japanese. The Americanization phenomenon in daily conversation has been deepened. And "OKKeee" has contained many meanings, today.
★ We have several Filipino friends who are studying the Care Work Service for the Disabled at the comprehensive facilities for the Aged & the Disabled. When we invited them to dinner the other day, I noticed an interesting thing in our conversations.
★ What time will you come? When I asked , "7pm. Is that okay?". It was a day when typhoon was approaching and rain breeze is strong and it was hard to walk. I said "I will pick you up at 6:40 by car," their reply "okay" While eating, my wife checking their reactions; "Can you eat this?" "How do you like it?" "Delicious, okay" and "okay" "okay" and "okay"s
★ We had a pleasant evening, It was about midnight when they washed and cleaned up, They were calling one anther; "Hurry up!" "okay, okay, I'm almost ready.” Here were, too, "okay" "okay" and "okay"s
★ English "okay" was being used in a very diverse expression according to the situation. It meant agree, allow, understand, emphasize, etc. It played an important function not only as a word but also as smoothing the whole conversations. I thought that Japanese "Okeee" played exactly the same role.
